Ride on mowers are those lawnmowers that have a rear engine and on which an operator rises. A ride-on lawnmower, also called a lawn tractor has an engine in the front. We will describe riding lawnmowers in this article.

We can distinguish riding lawnmowers into two types, regular riding lawnmowers and zero turn lawnmowers. A regular lawnmower takes between four and twenty eight inches to turn through 180 degrees. This is wasted movement and zero turn lawnmowers are designed to eliminate this waste. Zero turn lawnmowers are also faster than regular lawnmowers, up to twice the speed.

Find out more about the Swisher Mower Z-MAX XTR Zero Turn Riding Mower from Amazon now!

The steering system on a regular lawnmower has a front steering wheel to turn the front wheels, the radius depending on the design. Zero turn lawnmowers steer by means of two handles that control the rear wheels, separately.

This allows independent rotation of the rear wheels. By moving one forward and one in reverse the lawnmower can be rotated in place.

Advantages and Disadvantages

The most important consideration when choosing between a regular lawnmower and a zero turn lawnmower is usually the cost. A regular riding lawnmower costs between $1500 and $3000. Zero turn lawnmowers are considerably more expensive, starting at around $2500 and reaching $7000 or more.

Another consideration is speed. A regular lawnmower has a top speed of around 4mph, a zero turn lawnmower around 9mph. In addition to getting through the lawn mowing much faster a zero turn lawnmower is fun to ride!

For a lawn with many obstacles, benches, flower beds etc a zero turn lawnmower will be much easier to operate, easily cutting grass right up to the obstacle.

The absolute best in gardening equipment are the ride on mowers that are also called ride on lawn mowers or even lawnmowers. These are small automobile like machines that can be either gas-powered or electric, and either one of these have their benefits. Besides just being good for cutting grass these machines can be used for a lot of different chores around the house and around the garden.

The best place to shop for ride on mowers is like in many other cases the internet. Not many loca shops provide such great selection of lawnmowers as the online shops that can offer you with a wide variety of different brands and can easily deliver the machines to your front lawn in a matter of days and usually with no extra fees. Driving around different stores will not only cost you a lot of money but also a lot of time and gasoline and in the end you will always have to settle for something that they have in the stock. When you search the internet, all you have to think about is how to choose the right ride on mower for you. This is a question that most retailers and manufacturers can answer and to be honest they are the ones who have the best answers to these questions. No mower review online will ever be able to provide you with such expertise as the sales persons in garden equipment shops.

How to Operate A Ride on Mower? How To Mow Lawn?

A machine that operates using revolving blades to cut a lawn at an even length is called lawn mower. It employs blades that rotate on vertical axis; this is called rotary mower, while the blades that rotates in horizontal axis is called as reel or cylinder mowers. It has variety of designs that suit particular purposes. The smallest type of it is pushed by a human and is suitable for residential small gardens. For larger lawns ride on mower is the best. For large areas of grass like municipal parks and golf courses lawn mower tractors is the best.

Ride lawn mowers have powerful engine that ranges from ten to twenty five horsepower. It is important to understand how to maneuver lawn mower safely, whether it is ride tractor mowers or push mower. You must know how to operate the mower properly before starting cutting the grass.

As the name connotes, the operator of ride on lawnmower is positioned on the upper part of the mower to maneuver the machine. Its blades and motor location are different, depending on what model and who the maker is. Most of the 4 stoke mowers have back wheels that are larger than the one in front. The sit on mower has zero degree turn capability that will often have additional side wheel that gives the mower added flexibility to complete the maneuvers. This machine is powered by gas or diesel.

Before starting the engine it is best to educate yourself first on riding the mower safely. It is best to check the lawn first and take away any toys, rocks and other objects that might cause obstruction during operation. If one accidentally hit on an object, it will surely cause damages or injuries since debris of the object will be thrown in different direction. Pets and children should not be allowed to enter the site when the ride-on mower is on the move.

Most small ride on mowers like the Honda ride mowers starts with key and ignition, just like an automobile. The vehicle is shifted into neutral and the blade is disengaged before you start the machine. After you have started the engine, you can now engage the blades, and adjust their height base on how low you want the grass to be cut.

When starting mowing, you’ll need to shift the machine with your foot on the break. After that slowly break free the break and start driving. The course you decide to take in cutting the grass is up to you. There are many ways to mow your lawn. Other would prefer doing it by outlining the edge and moving from the outside to the inside. The operation of the machine depends entirely on your personal preference. You will discover soon that some technique get it done faster than others.

Buy the best selling Weed Eater WE-ONE 825 Series Gas Powered Gas Powered Riding Lawn Mower now!

It is much easier to mow a flat lawn than to mow a steep one, which is very dangerous and requires expertise. Ride on lawn mower are used more than push mower, therefore the added danger of tipping must be prevented. It is not recommended to mow side to side, it should be done up and down for slopes.

Things you need to Know about Ride on Mowers

The smallest ride on mowers are used in a yard where conventional mower can take too long to do the task. It is used on football fields, farms and in single residence lawn. The cutting speed is 3600 rpms with 60 inches blade radius. The engine can be from 10 to 25 horse power. The ride lawn mowers may look like go-cart operating with special control and safety concern.

The ride on mower is operated from a seating position. The blade and engine position differs depending on the model and manufacturer. Most of the mower has four wheels, the rear wheel typically much bigger than the front ones. Ride on mower that achieves zero degree turn radius, an additional wheels are connected to the blade case that guide and swivel the mower to cut within its space. The engine operates on diesel engine.

The regular size lawn or yard of American homes requires a mower. The specific type of engines is either two strokes or 4 stroke mowers that run on gasoline or other fuel oils and is usually have one cylinder. The engine of this type of mower has a power of 1.5 to 5.25kW. The first thing you need to do is to start the carburettor-equipped mowers. As compared with push mower the newer model has come out with designed pre-set throttle speeds to prevent over revving and in the process prolong the engines of the mowers.

Ride tractor mowers are expensive. But before purchasing one it is best to determine first if you really need one or not. The size of your lawn is the first factor to consider. You will also need to choose from different models of lawn mower tractors if the yard is at least an acre or more. The best model usually recommended by experts is the Honda ride mowers.

Another essential factor to consider in choosing the ride on mower to purchase is the expected time which requires devoting in moving. Some would like to have the task done immediately and others find it an enjoyable thing. It is also best to consider the storage space.

Finally, one should decide whether the tractor will be used other than cutting grass. Lawn mower can be used also for other garden job aside from cutting. If you where able to purchase a mower with versatile function then you can also use it as a trailer for transferring garden tools in wide yard. You can also choose a mower that can be used for any type of seasons. A versatile mower can be suited in different devices such as vacuums, snowplows, rototillers, and vacuum. These mowers with versatility are very useful in large lawns or yards.

Before this article ends let’s not forget proper maintenance. To make the machine to last in a longer time it is best to know the proper maintenance of each mower. Aside from maintenance proper handling is also very important to prevent damages and injuries. Since it involves sharp blades one must be careful in operating the machine.

To the average person, lawn mowers operated while riding the machine are all one and the same, and terms such as ride on mower, riding mower or lawn tractor could be used interchangeably. There are marked differences in these machines, however. A riding mower, which is also called a ride on mower, has a rear engine. In contrast, ride-on mowers that have their engine mounted in front are called lawn tractors, and if these contraptions are designed for other garden purposes in addition to cutting grass, they are called garden tractors. These are some good tools for general lawn care. Mowing should be one of the most important things that you can do to your garden.

The ride on mowers powered by rear engines are divided into two classes. One type are called the conventional riders. These are nimble machines but waste movement at both ends of their cutting path because they can take 4 to 28 inches to turn 180 degrees. The other type, called zero-turn ride on mowers (ZTRs), are more efficient because, as their name suggests, these mowers are designed to turn around in their own track with no wasted movement at the end lines of grass cutting. Another advantage of zero-turn riders is that these mowers can run at double the speed of conventional riders. It is a possibility that these types of ride on mowers are the most useful tools to be used to mow lawn. Tractor mowers in general are meant for larger lawns so you should not need one for your small garden.

Buy the best selling Poulan Pro Lawn Tractor from Amazon now!

The steering system is where ZTRs and conventional riders markedly differ. ZTRs are designed to have two steering handles that control the two rear wheels separately. If one handle is moved forward and the other is moved in reverse, the zero-turn rider would rotate in place. Conventional riders, on the other hand, are manuevered through a steering wheel which controls the front wheels to turn within a radius specific to the vehicles’ design. Brigs & Stratton lawnmowers have been quite a pinnacle in developing this equipment and if you are looking forward to ride tractor mowers then you could try out their models.

Cost is one of the factors that will come into play when deciding on which of these ride on mowers would be ideal for purchase. Conventional riders are generally less expensive than ZTRs. Although more expensive, ZTRs however are more enjoyable to operate and drive; these machines are nimble and particularly able to circle around trees with much ease. Speed is another factor to consider. The top speed of conventional riders is only about 4 mph. ZTRs, on the other hand, can mow a lawn at a faster clip of as fast as 9 mph. There are even super ZTR models that can cut grass at 15 mph and mow an entire football pitch in less than 10 minutes.

With the distinct advantage of ZTR ride on mowers, it is not surprising that there are now fewer and fewer conventional riders being introduced. Zero-turn riding mowers have become hot items among residential lawn care equipment, and introductions of new ZTR models have been increasing. Because of the rising popularity of ZTRs and the resulting intense competition, lawnmower manufacturers are trying to outdo each other in terms of design improvements and adding product features. Warranties are also being extended with some manufacturers offering a three-year limited warranty. The standard warranty for ZTRs is two years and is limited to the parts and labor. In any case, it would be ideal to purchase ride lawn mowers from an equipment dealer which has its own service department. Adequate equipment servicing may not be provided by a big-box retail store selling ride on mowers.

The brand Honda is usually associated with motorbikes and automobiles. However, this Japanese trademark has also products competing in the market for grass cutting machines or lawn tractors. These lawn tractors which could also be simply referred to as ride on mowers come in several models.

Among these ride on mowers is the HF2315SBE which is regarded as the top selling in its class. This particular model is most suited for gardens that are up to 2 acres in area. This lawn tractor has a five-year extended warranty with no additional cost to the unit, demonstrating the value-for-money proposition offered by the Honda ride mowers manufacturer.

Visiting a local Honda lawn tractor dealer will reveal some of this model’s features. These features include the Honda “ContraFlo” cutting system reputed to deliver the neatest grass mowing and the highest efficiency in mulch collection. Honda’s grass cutting system uses counter-rotating blades; ejected at high velocity, the cut grass are then collected in a 280-liter collector mounted at the rear of the lawn tractor. This will make your ride on mower a great tool for cleaning out your garden.

Through this system, other garden debris like pine needles and autumn leaves can also be gathered in a clean and efficient manner. It is easy to clean this lawn tractor after use as it has a deck wash facility wherein any hose with snap-fit design can easily be attached to the machine’s connector. Unloading cut grass is also convenient with this ride on mower’s grass collector that can be emptied from the driving position. Lawn care while mowing has never been easyer. You can just drive next to your compost and empty the grass container without leaving your mower.

This Honda lawn tractor is equipped with a 15-horsepower twin engine. It has a manual, five-gear transmission and is fitted with a deck measuring 92 cm (36 in). This ride on mower can adjust cutting heights from 29 mm to 90 mm. Its compact design allows for efficient maneuvering characteristic of mowers coming from their factory,

Another strong Honda entry in the market for ride on mowers is the Honda HF1211S. This model is relatively smaller compared with other Honda models. After all this lawn tractor has been designed for smaller gardens. With such a design this ride on mower can be operated even in areas with small spaces where movement of bigger mowers would be restricted. Some brand like Briggs & Sratton make also these zero turn ride mowers that are easily used in smaller lawns.

A ride on mower that runs on an 11-horsepower engine has a five-speed manual transmission and comes with a soft start electric clutch so that gear engagement is smooth once the clutch is released. There’s a choice for a hydrostatic transmission featuring seamless speed changes afforded by a fluid-controlled drive system that could be tweaked in an infinite variety of ways. This lawn tractor discharges grass cuttings to the machine’s rear end, keeping overall width to only 76 cm (30 inches) but delivering increased collection efficiency just the same.

The collector of this Honda ride on mower has a capacity of 170 liters. Like the bigger Honda ride mowers, the cut grass can be unloaded from the driving position. The operator will know when the collector is full through a beeper which automatically resets when the cut grass has been unloaded. An added convenience is this lawn tractor’s deck which at 72 cm (28 inches) allow operations in all mowing situations which makes this ride on mower a good choice for everyone.

The most important thing when it comes to getting your own ride on mower is to make sure that it is a model that has good quality parts, and has spare parts easily available. I once made this error of getting a low quality tractor mower that had absolutely no possibility of changing any of the parts to anything else than the original parts made by the manufacturer. This became a problem since I would have wanted to replace the mower motor with a Briggs & Stratton small engine. That would have cut down the gas expenses and even left me with more power.

Some of the parts that are easily available for most of the models are found without any problems on almost all the ride on mower models that are available. A gas can is maybe the most basic thing that you can get. Remember that this is not the gas tank and a can is completely extra to be carried around. If you have a big lawn and don’t want to risk running out of gas while mowing you might want to have one of these attached to the side of the mower where accessible. Make sure that you don’t put it in a place where it will risk of getting in contact with any obstacles like trees. You will be a lot safer that way.

A lot of the basic models of ride on mowers don’t have any types of meters on them. That makes it impossible to make assumptions on how long can you use the mower without refueling and counting your average fuel consumption. Using a gas powered mower it is important to know how much it consumes to be sure that you are being ecological about your lawn mowing. Some kind of a hour meter or a mile meter is an important part in a mower and it can save you a lot of money.

While in storage your ride on mower needs to have some kind of cover to prevent it from rusting and the corroding effect of the wind and rain. If you are storing your mower inside a garage then in my opinion it is not necessary to get a ride on mower cover but most of the experts will tell you that without a proper cover the delicate parts of the mower will attract a lot of dust and the electronics might start having problems.

The oil pump is an important part of a ride on mower also since without it you can’t really do much. It keeps the oil moving inside the engine of the mower and enables it to function properly. Without a good pump the oil will stop moving and will eventually burn and do the same to your engine.

While checking for your tire pressures you should be also thinking about getting your own air compressor. The ride on mowers have such high tire pressures that it can be hard to pump it by hand, and to keep the mower moving and prevent the lawn from receiving too much damage from the tires it is a good idea to have the perfect tire pressures all the time. Just use the tire gauge to check the pressure.

The heart of the mower is the engine. While looking for good engines you might want to look at the Honda engines and the Briggs & Stratton mower engines. I don’t have any experience on other models but these have served me quite okay. I have had to have a few repairs for these brands also but nothing is perfect in my eyes.

The new ride on mower models have electric clutches and this in my opinion is something that has greatly improved the handling of the mowers. You now longer need to use a hand clutch or even a foot clutch to get the proper gears on.

Besides just having a good engine you need to have some high quality gator mulching blades that will keep on cutting through anything beneath your mower. These will go through any type of grass or even hay. Using these parts your ride on mower will be a powerful gardening tool.

When it comes to having a big garden I am all for it. I remember in my childhood having a large field where I would go out and play on the large lawn. It was not clear to me that it also took a lot of work and my father used his ride on mower almost twice a week to maintain the lawn in that good of a condition. He was indeed a lawn care fanatic and it was actually something he enjoyed instead of something that he considered as a chore. Especially after he bought his new zero turn riding mower which had him speeding around and around even when there was no lawn to be mowed.

When it comes to his ride on mower and the good condition of the blades he was very worried. The maintenance was usually something that was more important than coming inside the house for the dinner in time. It was not unusual for him to be sharpening the blades and scraping the bottom of the zero turn ride mower to remove all the excess grass that had not been properly handled by the grass outlet system. There was this propeller that would create nearly a vacuum under the mower so that the grass you are mowing would stand up straight and when mowed it would be sucked out from around the blades. That way the blades are not needed to be cleaned so often and you can concentrate on doing what you are meant to be doing.

The best thing when it came to the new zero turn rider was not actually the non existent turn radius of the mower but the speed that it was able to achieve. No way a ride on mower is intended to be used for speeding around your farm but for us is was quite a lot of fun driving around the lawn while going almost double the speed that the previous ride on mower was able to achieve. The previous model that we had was a Honda ride mower but this newer one was Briggs & Stratton lawnmower and is had to be one of the best I had ever sat on.

After a while it seemed like we did not get any more fun out of that huge lawn and it became expensive to maintain. The actual global warming lead to the point where we had to be watering the lawn so that it would not burn. This was very expensive since there is a lot of space there and usually we had to use the tractor mower to drive around and pull a water tank in the behind so that we were able to spread the water all around the garden. The worst part about this is that it became expensive and we had to be doing it almost daily during the hot summers in Texas. We had to give up on the lawn and not long time after we sold that house and moved to a smaller one which was near the city. This was in my opinion the best decision we had ever made. It was good that our new ride on mower was a zero turn rider because this time our garden was smaller. There were some tight spots where we had to be able to maneuver to be able to mow lawn. Tractor mowers were not able to do this so we had the real thing for the job. I am much more of a garden person anyways and not that much in to a huge lawn, even if it is fun to speed around in a good mower.

Besides of just having good memories about the zero turn riding lawn mowers and ride on mowers I think that the best part of my childhood must have been the garden in our newer house. It made sure that the blades of the new mowers were frequently renewed since there were a lot of nice cornerstones. That made every one of us spend more time in the garden and maintaining our ride on mower to keep it in perfect shape. Finding the best zero turn riding mower is going to take some time and research but once you have found the perfect one for you have fun while mowing the lawn!
